Gift Fair warms up winter

The South Island’s most important retail event kicks off its three day run at 9am on 22 July at Westpac Centre, Addington in Christchurch. Each year the South Island Gift Fair attracts thousands of retailers looking to get the jump on their competitors by finding limited edition, high margin or just simply hugely popular items.
With more than 230 exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of items the 2007 Fair will be the largest yet enthuses dmg world media’s Irene Smith, who’s also buzzing about the hot new items that exhibitors just returned from buying trips to Hong Kong, China, Paris, Frankfurt and New York will be showing for the first time in New Zealand.
That doesn’t mean it’s all imported product, there’s a great selection of New Zealand made product as well – more than 50 companies will have NZ manufactured product on display.
“While it will be larger than it’s ever been before, it’s still the smallest of the three national Gift Fairs. The Mainland’s show is always the most intimate, friendly and relaxed and that makes it a great place to network with the key people from each supplier company.
“The range of good on show will be as impressive as the size of this year’s Fair. The smaller size of the venue makes it easy for retailers to make the most of their time at the Fair and do very good business. With free parking and hassle-free traffic in and around the Westpac Centre, retailers have more time to spend with individual suppliers than they do at either of the Auckland fairs, working on increasing their profits!”
Another feature of South Island Gift is the Professional Shop Display Workshop. “These workshops are hugely popular and great value at just $20,” says Irene. “Professional display designer Vince Collins will demonstrate how to create four different professional in-store or shop window displays.” Held in conjunction with the New Zealand Gift Trade Association and Catlor Marketing, the workshop is at Twiggers Restaurant, Addington Raceway, just a minute’s stroll across the carpark from the Show. For tickets, contact Julie Simpson of the NZGTA (09-366 7306).
To emphasise that the Fair is about enjoyment as well as business, this year’s visitor prize draw is for a trip for 2, to tropical Noumea.
“The lucky winner and a partner will spend four nights in Noumea. The prize includes return economy-class airfares, accommodation at a top class property and return transfers to and from the airport. You can read about previous travel prize winners on the gift fairs website, www.giftfairs.co.nz.
“The website is also a great resource to plan your visit by searching exhibitor lists for show-only specials and New Zealand-made product, as well as any product category. For anyone who hasn’t taken the opportunity to get to a gift fair yet, we can also help plan your trip. Just give Buyer Relationship Manager, Susan McCarty, a call on 09-976 8355 or email Susan@giftfairs.co.nz .”

Dealing with the ever changing face of hospitality

In the increasingly frenetic world of hospitality, have you ever wondered how to give yourself space to breathe?

Smart bosses the world over have discovered the secret to working on, not in their businesses – giving themselves time to both work strategically and enjoy the fruits of their labours.

And you, too, can find out just how to maximise free time and liberate yourself from the daily grind of trying to do it all.

Many such secrets will be revealed at the 2007 HospitalityNZ Show Telecom Business Seminars in September.

“We have some of the best business professionals at this year’s HospitalityNZ business seminars to discuss the future of the industry,” says Michele Harrod, group manager, HospitalityNZ. “Anyone who is serious about success in the hospitality industry won’t want to miss attending these seminars.”

With 12 seminars over three days, the HospitalityNZ Show pulls together some of Australia and New Zealand’s leading hospitality and business experts to share the secrets of their success.

Seminars that focus on the evolving nature of New Zealand’s hospitality industry are designed specifically to give Kiwi hospitality managers and staff an insight into what the future holds.

“Hospitality is an incredibly dynamic industry where nothing stands still,” says Harrod. “This year the seminars at HospitalityNZ will take an in-depth look at best-practice ways to manage the challenges and changes it holds for the future.”

Topics such as how to deal with the rise of the socially responsible consumer, building profitability, racing against the clock to grow your business and how to nurture staff who are “young and restless” are just some of the seminars on the agenda.

A major attraction at this year’s show is “The Great New Zealand Coffee Experience”. Australian café professional Sean Edwards will talk about the rise of the coffee and café culture in New Zealand and what changes lay in store for this sector.

A panel of coffee experts will engage in open discussions on where the café and coffee market stands, what its strengths and weakness are, price wars on coffee and how international competitors are affecting the NZ market.

And it’s not just the competitive edge that seminar attendees will go home with. All hospitality professionals who visit the show go in the daily draw to win up to $12,000 worth of product of their choice from any of the Pick Six sponsors. That could include anything from new latte machines, crockery and furnishings to vodka and staff training programmes from sponsors Altura Coffee, WizBang Technologies, Stark Vodka, Perfect Pieces, North Shore International Academy and Burns and Ferrall.

HospitalityNZ, which includes the Hospitality Show, Wine New Zealand, Telecom Seminars, the Culinary Fare and the NZ Bar Show, is to be held from September 2-4, 2007 at the ASB Showgrounds from 10am-5pm.
